Patients who suffer from hearing loss or suspect they might have another hearing and balance-related condition may benefit from audiologic testing. At Florida ENT, we offer many different types of audiologic testing for any type of hearing or imbalance a patient might be dealing with. The follow are three of the tests we commonly use:

Audiogram
How it works: Uses sounds of specific frequencies and intensity levels to determine what a person can hear in each ear.
This is your typical physician check-up, where a patient hears sounds through headphones. The patient is then asked to identify each sound and in which hear it was heard. The sounds become fainter and farther as the test progresses and the goal is to determine the lowest level at which the patient can hear.

Tympanometry
How it works: Examines and diagnoses the middle ear by varying air pressure in the ear canal to see how the ear responds.   
Tympanometry measures the functionality of the year drum. To avoid affecting ear pressure, patients may not move, speak, or swallow during the test. Any abnormal findings could be fluid in the middle ear or impacted ear wax.

Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response Test
How it works: Examines brain waves that have been stimulated by a clicking sound in order to evaluate the auditory pathways in the brain.
As the patient listens to a clicking noise through headphones, electrodes are placed on the scalp and earlobes. The electrodes record the brain’s reaction and the audiologist will test for diagnose nervous-system abnormalities and hearing loss. The BAER test is commonly used with infants and children.

Rhinoplasty is one of the most common surgical procedures to date, and it’s also one of the scariest. So much so that the thought of it is enough to change some people’s minds.  What is Rhinoplasty
Also referred to as nose surgery, this surgical procedure is designed to improve the appearance and function of the nose. Whether it be removing a hump, reducing or increasing the overall size, narrowing the nasal passage, or changing the angle between the nose and upper lip, there are many complications that rhinoplasty can solve.

How long does the surgery take?
Nose surgery doesn’t take too long. A simple open nose procedure can be completed in under two hours. However, a cleft-lip nose procedure can take a little bit longer (usually two and a half hours).

What can I expect after surgery?
A long-acting numbing agent is used after surgery to ensure the patient feels comfortable and pain-free. Following the surgical procedure, a splint is usually placed on the nose for one week. You will feel swollen for several days and should experience some bruising. Complete changes could take up to a year depending on the procedure.

If you've ever had the displeasure of dealing with sinus pressure and pain, you're probably well aware of how uncomfortable it can be. What you're also probably aware of is that your symptoms weren't alleviated by taking medication. Often times, sinus pressure can be treated by natural remedies.

Omega-3
Omega-3 fatty acids contain EPA, which is a natural anti-inflammatory. Some common foods containing omega-3 are salmon, haddock, and flaxseed oil.

Spices
Spices such as tumeric and ginger have anti-inflammatory agents that can help ease your allergies. If you're hosting a BBQ this weekend, look for a chicken or steak marinade that includes ginger or tumeric!

Juice

When it comes to facial plastic surgery, there are a lot of myths floating around out there. You might have heard that nose jobs can melt. Or perhaps you've heard Botox injections will leave you expressionless for life. We're here to break down whats fact and whats fiction when it comes to rhinoplasty!

Fact or Fiction: Can rhinoplasty affect your sense of smell?
This is a fact! However, loss of smell is only temporary following this procedure. It should be back to normal within 3-6 weeks.

Fact or Fiction: Can rhinoplasty affect my voice?
This is fact, as well. Although the changes are almost undetectable, it still can change.

Fact or Fiction: My nose will look different right away.
This is fiction. The nose you desire will not appear the way you envision it for up to a year following surgery.

Fact or Fiction: You have to reach skeletal maturity to receive rhinoplasty.
This is a fact. Skeletal maturity means that your bones are fully developed. This usually doesn't happen for females until about age 14-15 and age 15 at minimum for males.

We're sure at some point or another you've heard the word "botox" being thrown around but may be unsure of what it exactly is. Botox Cosmetic is a prescription drug that temporarily paralyzes muscles when injected.

Tips To Handle Allergy Symptoms

Are your allergy sypmtoms driving you crazy? After a while the constant sneezing, sniffling, runny nose and itchy eyes tend to take a toll. Luckily, there are a few things you can do to help reduce the irritation and annoyance that are allergy symptoms. Check them out below.

Eat an orange. Oranges are naturally rich in vitamin C, a natural antihistamine. Studies have also linked low levels of vitamin C with allergies. So, if your allergies are acting up, consider taking a vitamin C supplement.

Wash bedding regularly. Washing your bed sheets and blankets every week in hot water is the best way to kill microscopic dust mites that love to make your bed their home.

Keep pets out of your bedroom. We know this one can be extremely tough, however, keeping your bedroom free of pet dander is extremely important (as it can cause allergies). Let the barking and meowing ensue!

Double check dryer vent. Did you know for every load of laundry you do, 19 pounds of moisture has to go somewhere? Crazy! Be sure that your dryer vent is going outside and not to your garage or basement. If it's in fact indoors, this could lead to mould build-up in your home leading to more discomfort.

Clean and declutter. Upkeeping your home is an integral part in dealing with allergies. Be sure to vacuum every room of the house once per week, declutter, keep bathroom free of mold and don't use scented detergents or cleaners.

Relieving Winter Congestion

From sinus infections and runny noses, to colds and the flu, winter is well known for taking a toll on health. Don't let winter illnesses get you down! There are several ways to get relief that will have you feeling better in no time!


Pump up the steam.
If your sinuses and nose are plugged, head for the shower! The steam from a hot shower can help alleviate congestion.

Know your nose.
If you find that the inside of your nose is dry and causing you discomfort, it's time to moisten and flush out your nostrils. To do so, you can purchase saline spray and unscented alcohol free body lotion and apply a little bit into your nostrils to loosen things up. Another way to relieve your symptoms is by purchasing a neti pot and doing a complete flush!

Snooze this way.
Did you know gravity can help with decongesting? It's true! Sleeping with your nose elevated above your heart will allow decongestion to happen on it's own. Time to fix those pillows!

Hydrate day and night.
Do you wake up with an extremely dry mouth in the middle of the night or morning? If so, you may need to think about purchasing a humidifier. This is the best way to keep your nose and throat hydrated throughout the night. However, hydrating by drinking water throughout the day is still just as important!

Simply put, hearing loss is the sudden or gradual decrease in hearing. Did you know hearing loss can be temporary, permanent, mild, severe, reversible and can affect one or both ears? If you're suffering from hearing loss, you're not the only one. Hearing loss affects up to 25% of individuals between the age of 65 and 75 and up to 50% of people over the age of 75.

Hearing loss is more complex of a condition than most know it to be. It can happen suddenly or  gradually, it can be mild or severe, it can be temporary or permanent, and it could affect one or both ears. Presbycusis, or age-related hearing loss, is the most common form of hearing loss. This affects about 25 percent of people in the age range of 65 to 75 and affects about 50 percent of people older than 75. Hearing loss, as it relates to age, tends to be more gradual than sudden.

Whether it is temporary or permanent, hearing loss is usually caused by some sort of damage to the inner ear. Hearing loss can affect all ages and could be caused by chronic exposure to loud noises, wax buildup, fluid buildup, foreign objects in the ear canal, or having a family history of hearing loss.

There are three basic types of hearing loss:

Conductive - Problems with hearing will usually stem from a structural or blockage issue occurring in the middle or outer ear. Conductive hearing loss causes sounds to be less audible. The most common treatment for this type of hearing loss is surgery.

Sensorineural - The inner ear and auditory nerve are most affected with this type of hearing loss. Hair cells, in the ear, are used as receivers for sound and sometimes they stop functioning  properly. Since sound is not being received by the ear, hearing aids are used as the most common treatment.

Mixed Hearing Loss - A combination of both conductive and sensorineural hearing loss can be developed. This occurs when there is damage to the outer or middle ear and the inner ear. The most common treatment for this type of hearing loss is with bone anchored hearing aids.

Common symptoms of hearing loss include either muffled or unusually loud speech, inability to understand conversation, a feeling of clogged ears, and ringing in the ears. While hearing loss affects the individual, they may not always be aware of their hearing deficiency until another person points it out to them. A diagnosis of hearing loss can be done through a physical examination of multiple hearing tests.

Temporary hearing loss could be due to a buildup of wax in the ear or from an infection. Treatments for these are a lavage, cleaning of the ear canal, or antibiotics. Permanent hearing loss could be due to damage to the inner ear, a congenital defect, or as a result of old age. Treatments for these include surgery and multiple forms of hearing aids.

Hearing Aids

Hearing aids are a common treatment option for those who are experiencing hearing loss. This non-invasive treatment is worn in or behind the ear to amplify sounds in order to improve listening and communication. It is important to know that hearing aids do not cure or improve hearing impairment, they simply increase the volume at which you hear. If your reception to sound is the problem, hearing aids may not be the resolution.

The three basic styles of hearing aids are:

Behind the Ear (BTE) - The BTE aid is worn behind the ear with a plastic mold placed inside the outer ear. Technology has advanced so the plastic mold can be switched out for a small plastic tube leading into the ear canal. Digital Hearing Aids - Sound waves are converted into numerical codes which are then amplified and transmitted to the ear. Digital aids are programmable to allow the user to focus on sounds coming from a certain direction. These aids are more expensive than the analog version.
